The Tantra of Lao Tzu

Tantra in the West is described as among other things, a Western teaching with Eastern roots, originating in the Indus Valley region, espousing basic spiritual principles like non-duality and the dual cultivation of energy between loving partners. This description can also be applied to Taoism. Taoism has origins in a similar area, the banks of the Yellow River in China, in what used to be the Tibetan plains. Like Tantra, Taoism talks about non-duality and dual cultivation of energy between partners. It, like Tantra, has foundations in Shamanism in the same region that is thousands of years old, too many years to count.

Lao Tzu is considered the sage founder of Taoism. He was a Historian–in those days this term meant not only a Historian but an intuitive reader and reader of celestial bodies. It is well known that Lao Tzu wrote the Tao Te Ching, one of the most well loved and translated works in the world, a founding text of Taoism.

Many people do not know that after Lao Tzu wrote the Tao Te Ching, he traveled and taught to those who sincerely wanted to learn his more advanced teachings. In the process of this, he created the Hua Hu Ching, a manuscript that influenced Ch’an Buddhism (Zen), Tibetan Buddhism, Sufism and yes, Tantra.

You might recognize Lao Tzu’s words today, almost as if they are deceptively modern rather than ancient. They might even sound surprisingly familiar, like something you’ve heard might hear from a Yoga or Tantra teacher today, as if Lao Tzu might be a founding father of Tantra. Here are some quotes from Lao Tzu.

Virtue – “Virtue is developed by highly evolved people that embrace all people and things and dispel the darkness which isolates them. Although innumerable lives are illuminated, highly evolved people do not think they have helped anyone, because to them the world is synonymous with oneself and one’s self is the world.”

Selflessness – “Following the Way (or the Tao) means practicing selflessness and extending virtue to the world unconditionally. In this way one not only eliminates heavy contamination accumulated through many lifetimes, but may also bring the possibility of restoring one’s own original divine nature…”

Non-duality – “Good people who are motivated to attain the correct awareness of a universal being should dissolve all conceptions of duality. With integral awareness of their moral responsibility, they will be able to help all people to eliminate the darkness of the dichotomous mind and the delusions stemming from the concepts of existence and non-existence so that they can finally attain the essence of integral subtle transcendence.”

The concepts of virtue, selflessness, and non-duality sure seem stated in a fresh new way here to those of us familiar with modern day Tantra workshops, yet they are actually thousands of years old, spoken by the author of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu.

In most sacred texts, spiritual development can be reduced to a few concepts, eliminating illusion that creates turbulence, being generous to return to the divine nature, and finding a spirit body that connects with the cosmic force, transcending time, duality and the need for anything but compassion and love.

Lao Tzu puts these words together succinctly and perhaps many of the words we’ve gleaned from sacred texts from religions around the world are summarized here, incredibly simply and eloquently.

Did Lao Tzu say anything about gender and sexuality? As a Tantra enthusiast and coach I feel unapologetic about the Westerner’s interest and hand in reforming Tantra. I’ve seen too many modern teachers with white-hot spiritual devotion, past life remembrances, that seem to just learn and teach these timeless concepts all over again, just in a different way of going about it. No matter what epoch or location, we all seem to be looking for ideas about how to create a more sacred space between couples, perhaps with ritual, communion or just energy cultivation. As the saying goes “Tantra is the original religion,” we just seem to recreate it.

Lao Tzu seems to know how to describe what’s at the heart of Tantra. Here are some beautiful quotes from Lao Tzu on gender and sex, unmatched in their brevity and eloquency:

Single Cultivation of Energy – “The relationship of the universal soul and the individual soul is just like the relationship between the moon and the lake. Spiritual security is always present, but the clouds of the mind create the phenomena of apparent separation.”

Yin and Yang – “The subtle essence of the universe is eternal…it is called the primal female, the Mysterious Origin. The operation of the opening and closing of the Gate of Origin performs the Mystical Intercourse of the universe. The Mystical Intercourse of yin and yang is the root of universal life.” Note: The yin and yang are phases of the “accomplished”, a still, rigid state that is “yin” and the phase of the “unaccomplished”, a phase of dynamics and flexibility that is yang. The integration of yin and yang is called T’ai Chi, something that exists in all things big and small. Nothing is fully accomplished, and nothing is fully unaccomplished.

Inner Marriage of Yin and Yang – “Unless an individual is born into the immortal realm, a[n] …integration of the yin and yang cannot happen…[it] is a gradual process of practicing pure diet, energy conducting exercises, and the cultivation and refinement of one’s own being.”

Sexuality – “An individual’s approach to sexuality is an indication of his level of evolution. There is a vast difference between ordinary human sexual activity and the dual cultivation of a practitioner of natural harmony…the purpose of angelic intercourse is the union and completion of an individual’s yin and yang energy. It is a process of refinement and sublimation of energy. Once the energy is refined, it is directed upward to the higher centers of one’s being. In angelic intercourse [as opposed to ordinary intercourse] spirit unites with spirit, mind with mind, and every cell of one body with every cell of the other body. It is the spirit, not the sexual organs, which directs such intercourse.”

Dual Cultivation – “Another difference is that ordinary intercourse seeks a substantial manifestation as its culmination, while angelic intercourse seeks the intangible union of yin and yang. Angelic intercourse is not completed by a substantial discharge, but rather the integration of each partner’s subtle energy…in angelic intercourse the love union is achieved spontaneously through the male’s non action. When one remains calm and relaxed, the gross sexual impulse diminishes and subtle energy becomes more developed. The great, subtle transformation takes place naturally and in silence. The whole universe is developed in this way. It happens naturally, not through making it happen.”

Lao Tzu is thought to come from a clan with Shamanic roots, at a time when the Chinese Emperors enlisted the services of Shaman. His teachings now seem relevant as ever, as part of a “universal tantra,” spiritual practices that seem to recreate themselves, generation after generation, epoch after epoch. However, few texts show the simplicity and precision of Lao Tzu’s words.

A Psychic’s Job: To Work Themselves Out of a Job

As a Psychic Reader, I always think it would be nice if the world called us “Priestesses” instead. (Bear with me, as I am using the female gender to describe all Psychics, but it is probably ok to use the female gender here).

Why use the term Priestess? In other traditions, modern and ancient, a Priestess is a woman who takes a spiritual role in the community. It could be she does prayer, journeying, channeling guidance, and healing work.

In this society, the term Psychic has been ridiculed a lot for the wrong reason in my opinion: religious bias.

However, a Psychic is a friendly neighborhood Priestess. She consults the Divine with you, and your Soul often recognizes her guidance as the kind you’ve been hearing yourself.

However, I think the paradigm of this friendly neighborhood Psychic evolves as you evolve. Look at this way, our path of evolution is this:

Ego -> Soul -> Spirit

Ego. Have an ego? Good! Psychologists like Carl Jung think you’d crack up without one. However your ego tends to live in survival mode sometimes asking repetitive questions: “Will I get a Soul mate?” “Will I get a new job?”

Psychics get these questions the most. However, with some skill building and exercises, you can learn to live and think at the next level: the level of Soul.

Soul. What is a Soul anyway, and where is it? Think of it this way. The Soul is the part of you that wants to evolve. In Hindu tradition it is Kundalini power. In Christianity it might be the Holy Ghost. The Soul is our power, tucked away, until such time that we decide we can’t live the other way anymore, and we decide to start living for our Soul. How do you access the Soul? Going to a Psychic helps point it out, but really it is when you start using your own intuition in an advanced way, through journeying techniques, meditation, watching everyday “coincidences and the symbology of things, that is how you talk to the Soul. Psychics love to do this and can show you how.

Spirit. Interested in Spirit? Good. It’s interested in you, but like they say, take one step towards God/Goddess and she will take 10 steps towards you. Ask any Psychic and once they decided to devote themselves more to an intuitive life, or go to any Psychic school, wow the intuition starts flowing more than ever. Catholic Saint and teacher Teresa De Avila talked about the Soul being a castle in the sky, but there was a center room where God came in. So the Soul ultimately consults with Spirit, however you experience that. Trust me, if I am doing a reading and I get information like “this person is going to get a girlfriend in 2 months” and then I get the phone call 2 months later that it came to pass, that’s not coming from me or my Soul alone. It is coming from Spirit. So with Psychics they all know, no Spirit, no reading. Capiche? Spirit and talking to Spirit is innumerably valuable in all of our lives. Rather than leaving it up to Psychics, we can develop our intuition for ourselves also.

Want to learn to talk to Soul and Spirit more? I specialize in teaching you how to do this. Download my ebook “How to Give Yourself Psychic Readings in 3 Days” to give you a head start. Like many other Psychic Readers I can read, but I love to teach.

How to Know your Feelings

Some of you might be fans of Marshall Rosenberg’s Non-Violent Communication (NVC), known to some as Compassionate Communication.

As a communication oaf, I’ve made every mistake in the book. However, Compassionate Communication is a great, easy plan for those that want to make good progress, and it usually just means communicating in terms of needs and requests.

Here’s the problem: most people get upset and frustrated around something and experience strong feelings. This can turn into stories that are highly charged–with a mother whose teen is not doing her homework, it might be “my daughter never listens to me, she’s just like her dad” etc. Here’s the solution NVC says: give yourself “self empathy.”

With self empathy, you slow down enough to know what your feelings are, and send yourself empathy for them. If you are a mom with a rebelling teen, you might start telling yourself your own feelings: “I am angry because I feel like I’ve asked my daughter to do her homework. I am afraid to start a discussion because she often doesn’t like it. I want to be heard.” In the NVC system, giving yourself self empathy gets you ready to ask for what you want in a more respectful way. I have a very hard time slowing myself when I have strong feelings, but hey, lots of us turn into “whistle blowers”, “cops” and people that label and whine. Working with NVC is a chance for hope, a simple and easy blueprint for more love and respect.

There’s still one question: how do we know our feelings to give ourselves self empathy? It can be tricky for us to know our own feelings, much less how to express them gently, with the high regard you want to talk to people in your life with.

Try the Total Truth Process.

It goes like this:

I am angry…I am angry when I have to be the “cop” that tells my kid to do her homework.

Then, work with hurt. Hurt is usually hidden under anger.

I am hurt…I am hurt that when you don’t do your homework. I feel like I don’t matter that much to you and I want to be a good influence in your life.

Then work with fear. Fear is usually hidden under hurt. List as many items as come up for you.

I am afraid…I am afraid that we are going to drift apart and our communication will no longer be working.
I am afraid…I am afraid you only have fun with your dad.

Then work with regret, or I am sorry. I am sorry is usually hidden under fear.

I am sorry…I am sorry that I don’t always stay calm.
I am sorry…I am sorry that I don’t always know what to do.
I am sorry…I am sorry that I haven’t created more trust or more joy.

Then work with “what I really want is.” What you really want is often hidden under sorry.

What I really want is…What I really want is for us to be a happy family, and for you to do your homework so you can have power in your life, and discipline.
What I really want is…What I really want is for us to be successful.
What I really want is…What I really want is connection.

Then work with what’s at the bottom of all communication…love!

I really love and appreciate you.”

Funny, but love is at the bottom of every connection. Have fun knowing more about your feelings with the Total Truth Process.

4 Reasons to Believe in Your Psychic Abilities

There are many reasons to believe that psychic ability is our birthright, and something all of us are born with. Here are four reasons to believe in your psychic abilities:

1) Look at what professional psychics say. Sylvia Browne and James Van Praagh, both world famous psychics, say everyone is psychic.

2) Look at the animal kingdom. Your dog knows you are coming home 10 minutes before you do. Your cat knows when someone is dying and sits on them, sometimes for days. Dolphins can tell when a mother is pregnant even before she can. Horses can read the minds of their rider–there’s a famous deaf rider that “talks” to her horse with her mind.

3) Look at ESP studies. The US and Soviet Union both studied and found that people have ESP. People are able to predict what medical condition an ill person has, even from thousands of miles away with just their name and a bit of birth data.

4) Look at Spiritual Traditions. Christians believe in the gift of prophecy. Many Christians experience intuitions through prayer. Intuition is the way to talk to God. If you are open to what other religions believe, Yoga, Taoism, Shamanism, many religious traditions believe in psychic phenomena. It could be argued that the form of Christianity that caused us to distrust our own intuition has to do with the leaders of the time and not the religion itself.

Power Up! 3 Ways to Be in your Power

Ask. Ever thought about asking your Higher Power about who your next boyfriend/girlfriend should be? Or which career move to make? You’ll probably get an answer! Asking is one of your greatest powers.

Surrender. Once you ask for answers, surrendering to the answers is a great power as well. Let’s suppose you did ask you who your next boyfriend/girlfriend should be, or how to have a better love life. You may not like the answer you get, but “trying it on” can be a delicious way to feel self care. The Divine has a loving plan for you–try it on! Living a life filled with guidance, and surrendering to that guidance is a life filled with assurance and peace–a life of power.

Sense. Taoist wisdom has us filling our power center in our lower abdomen with awareness and cosmic energy. Our belly becomes our seat of awareness, and a place where we can sense and decipher all the information the universe has to offer. We can sense our next move in any direction, and we can bypass the temptation to think and stress using our mind instead. Learn how to “sense” rather than think, and stay in your power.

Intuition – Your Inner Guru

“Genius is developed through the Sixth Sense.” -Napoleon Hill

The word intuition literally means to “teach from within.”

Working with our intuition means working with our “inner guru”.

When we work with the more spiritual facets of our intuition, we “receive.” What types of knowledge have been gotten this way?

Napoleon Hill received some of his book “Think and Grow Rich” this way. Albert Einstein received his vision of his famous formula e=mc2 this way, imagining himself going at the speed of light. Michael Jackson said he received his music this way, often between 2 and 4am. (Some people think the angelic realms are most open for business at this time).

Genius is not always “thought” as much as it is “received.”

The creativity for your business may be in store when you sit and meditate rather than when you are busy at meetings or making your to-do list.

I highly recommend people to come to my Intuition for Business class Wednesday and engage their inner knowing at hyperspeed. Your intuition links you with the Divine, what some consider the source of true genius.

By learning how to listen to your intuition there are many payloads. There is not only abundance available (abundance can be as simple as being happy), there is simplicity and peace when you follow your intuition. You become more available for love and money and all the rest of life.

My inner guru, my intuition, told me that “Abundance is attracted by a naked heart.” It feels true, that following your true joy is a way to abundance, the most direct way. My intuition tells me loads, and often I will share it on Facebook. It is a growing dance, dancing with intuition.

The thing I said earlier, that abundance can be as simple as being happy, comes from the Hicks. The Hicks channel Abraham, a group of celestial beings that answer questions for people about life. Without intuition and “receiving” this knowledge would never be spread.

What is your inner guru, your intuition telling you today about your business? Your intuition is like a channel. When it is cleansed and cleared and practiced with, it will be a divine channel indeed.

3 Ways to Be a Better Friend

“The better part of one’s life consists of his friendships.”
-Abraham Lincoln

Having sound friendships can mean having a better life. Here are three ways to improve friendships:

Center – When you are centered you are satisfied. When you are uncentered you are constantly trying to get satisfied. A centered person can be a good friend, unencumbered with preoccupation. Taoist wisdom invites you to shift your center of awareness from your mind to your belly/dan tien, where whole body knowing trades itself for the preoccupations of the mind. By learning your true center you can become more available to others, becoming a better friend.

Hold Space – Friends often need space to be themselves, and nothing more. Imagine yourself like a nucleus of an atom, able to be a centering influence on your friend while you listen and “hold space” for them while they talk, allowing them to feel contained by your love and friendship.

Grow – In Tibetan Bon, a form of Shamanism thought to be over 17,000 years old, friends are thought to be partners in spiritual growth. Be a person that wants to grow, who is interested in growth. The lessons you learn make you a better person and a better friend.

The 3 Steps of Intuition

Step one: you’re not exactly an intuition “wuss.” You intuitively know what your family wants for dinner, and you call on the Mother Mary statuette in your car and get a good parking space. But there’s another level.

Step two: you’re able to journey and get detailed info about what direction to take in life; what boyfriend or girlfriend to choose, what business move to make, what to say to a relative you need to talk to.

Step three: you love how your life is going when you listen to your intuition, and you hate how it goes when you don’t. You decide to commit to your intuitive direction. That means picking up and moving to Maui at a moment’s notice, or writing a new book of channeled material. Guess what? Your intuition starts flooding more information than ever, and you’ve never been so prosperous, focused, and happy in your life. The people that love you notice the difference and your relationships shine. Other people committed to their intuition appear to you, and together you help the planet. You feel more satisfied than ever before.

The difference between these steps? Some faith in the power of intuition.

Let me know what you think!

Want to Write a Hit eBook? Think of a Good Title and the Work’s Half Done

Some of you know that I’ve been an eBook Publisher for the past 14 years, and have had over $1M in lifetime sales in ebooks.

The best is yet to come in eBooks, what with Kindle, Barnes and Noble Reader, Sony Reader, Google Reader, IPad, ITunes and Mobile Phones all waiting for your new ebook these days!

Here’s the juiciest news–did you know that when you think of a title for your ebook, the ebook is half sold! 50% of book sales in a bookstore are from the title alone. That means us buyers are often sold by just the title and concept of a book we buy.

In my manifesto about selling ebooks online, “Write a Best-Selling Ebook,” I talk about “5 Us” of choosing a good title–the first is Urgency.

I try to ask my clients and/or readers about urgency, since urgency sells books. Some topics are inherently urgent, i.e. preventing diabetes, fixing credit. However, there are ways to create more urgency in book titles since urgency sells books.

For example, I might tell you I have book on “Tips for Knitting a Cool Hat.” You might think that’s cool. But if I tell you I have a book called “How To Knit Your First Hat in One Night,” that might create a more vivid picture of your success, and it might create more demand for your book.

More than titles, people buy propositions. The proposition tells them that they are going to win if they buy your book. I love the title of the new Marci Shimoff book “Love for No Reason.” It is a book about how to find unconditional love in your life. If it was just called “Unconditional Love,” the title might not create as much urgency to go out and get the book. Marci creates a great proposition out of her title, and it’s a knockout.

Titles include topics, and you need a hot topic. Ebooks are a hotter topic than books, unconditional love (i.e. “Love for No Reason”) is a hotter topic than romantic love. What makes a topic hot? It is something current. I once sold 70,000 copies of a book “Improve your Credit Score in 24 Hours.” Why was this topic hot? It wasn’t because the topic of credit repair is new, but the book promises to show you how to do it in 24 hours. The trick is finding out that every major creditor has a computerized system now where they can delete poor credit marks in minutes.

Finally, your (e)book title has something else built in; search engine terms that people use to find a book like yours. For example, I have a book called “How to Give Yourself Psychic Readings in 3 Days.” I could have called it “Improve your Clairvoyance.” They both mean roughly the same thing.

However, 12K people type “Clairvoyance” into Google every month, but the term “Psychic Readings” gets 40,000 searches.

It pays to do your homework to come up with a good title. Find out more in my manifesto about selling ebooks online, “Write a Best-Selling Ebook–right now it comes with a video on how to get your book on Kindle.

Remember, come up with a hot title and your ebook is 50% sold!

Self Care and Intuition: How They Go Together

Intuition is a vital part of our lives, and even more so when we are living through times of rapid change.

Many people don’t know that your intuition can be your seat of ultimate power. More than just an occasional “hunch” or “feeling,” it can be your seat of Higher Consciousness. If you believe in a Higher Power, it is the way you talk to your Higher Power, aligning with the source of power in your life, and getting inspiration that guides and strengthens you on your way. Like any “muscle,” your intuition can grow in strength, and you life becomes more easy and assured. You make better decisions, and reap the rewards.

Everyone is talking about intuition these days. It is widely acknowledged that there is a “psychic awakening” going on in the world today. Oprah has featured intuitive guests like Psychic Medium James Van Praagh, and Faith Healer John of God.

I teach classes regularly on the subject of intuition, and have also written a book on the subject: “How to Give Yourself Psychic Readings In 3 Days.” You may have heard that there are exercises you can do to teach yourself more intuition, and that everyone is intuitive.

However, there is one aspect of intuition that is rarely talked about: self care. Your body is your divining rod, and your mind (including your emotions) can be an empty vessel in which to receive intuitions. But guess what? Few people have a clear body and mind: their body might be an afterthought, with high stress, low exercise, etc. The mind often times goes “neglected” too, with too little self esteem, and too many repetitive thoughts about resentments, regrets and rejections. Vianna Stibal, famous Medical Intuitive and Author of “Theta Healing,” says that if we only got rid of the three Rs, resentment, regrets and rejection, we’d have minds that could bend spoons!

Well how do we get our body and mind ready for better intuition? Well, here is the good news: you can use your intuition to tell you everything you need to know. Sitting with your intuition each day and doing little “journeys”; sessions where you receive words or pictures about your questions, might be a great start to find out what you need to know. Some people find their intuition tells them to drink more water, or have a Master Cleanser fast, or drink a bit of Yerba Mate tea. Self care creates more intuition, and intuition creates more self care. You’ll almost always find that you get better inspiration than you would have had without using your intuition in your day.

Try sitting with your intuition each day as a start. As long as you start using your intuition, you’re on to something. 😉
